Chemical Peels: The Basics

Chemical Peels: The Basics

What are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a solution that’s applied to the skin which causes it to lift off and eventually shed the outer layer of skin. The fresh skin underneath is more smooth and less pigmented, making this procedure an appealing (haha) alternative to facial resurfacing.

What do they do?

Chemical peels can be applied to your face, neck or hands. They’re most commonly used for:

  • Reducing fine line wrinkles around your eyes and mouth
  • Reducing wrinkles from sun damage and aging
  • Fading mild scars
  • Treating acne
  • Reducing age spots, freckles, or dark patches
  • Improving the overall look and feel of your skin

How do I care for it afterward?

Your skin becomes more sensitive to UV rays after a peel, so it’s important to wear sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day. (You should be doing this regardless, but even more so after a chemical peel.)
Other ways you can shield your freshly peeled skin from the sun include limiting your time in direct sunlight between 10 am and 2 pm when it’s at its strongest, and wearing fun, wide-brimmed hats.
The professional who administers your peel should also provide you with additional instructions for care following the procedure.

Is a chemical peel the right choice for me?

We recommend scheduling a consultation to speak with a professional before getting a chemical peel. You’re more than welcome to give us a call if you’re curious!
